Only 10% of life sciences companies have a tagline next to their logos

A few years ago we created a post, “Are Medical Company Taglines Becoming Redundant”. In it, we mentioned the fact that many of the most admired brands in the world have stopped or reduced the use of taglines in their logos. This includes brands such as Starbucks, Whole Foods, Lululemon, Nordstrom. Some brands whose taglines helped propel them to greatness no longer use them. 

“in today’s media, the most common advertising real estate is a small mobile phone screen, and much of a brand’s verbal messaging is constrained by a 140-character limit or six seconds of video. A tagline would dominate communication in these formats and crowd out the brand logo or the ad-specific message.”

We went on to list 40 taglines used by top pharmaceutical and medical device companies.

I thought that it would be fun to see what has happened since. Has the trend to remove the taglines from medical device and life sciences logos continued? 

We used the database of more than 1,000 life sciences companies, MedSiteCentral, to determine which life sciences companies including pharma, biopahrma, medical devices, and medtech still used taglines next to their logos. 

From this 1,000+ sample, it is our findings that fewer than 10% of medical companies use taglines on the websites.

Do you still need a tagline for your medical company?

It appears the answer is no. Using taglines in pharma seems a little dated today. A tagline on a mobile phone would appear too small to be read. A little digging reveals that many of the websites with logos and taglines have not been updated for a while, so when they are, many of the taglines will likely disappear.
